That’s not exactly a shock, as Americans and personal finance have historically been a taboo subject. But with inflation sirens in full swing and recession clouds looming, US credit cardholders not only avoid talking about card debt, they’re afraid to even look.

According to a new study by Upgraded Points, which aimed to get a behind-the-scenes look at consumers’ credit card behavior, 20% of respondents are “terrified of checking their credit card statements.” Almost 10% more women than men said they were afraid to check their credit card statements.
