What you need to know about Arkansas, Missouri – KY3 Tax Free Weekend | Vette Leader

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – School supplies can be expensive, and if you have a few bucks to save, you might want to shop this weekend. There is no state sales tax on certain purchases, such as clothing, computers, and school supplies.

By participating in the tax-free weekend you can save up to 8% on shopping.

This doesn’t apply to every item on your back-to-school list. Earphones, tissues, zip bags and accessories are subject to state sales tax. You don’t have to be a teacher or student, everyone can benefit from the savings. Consumer credit advice experts have these tips to help shoppers save this weekend.

Take advantage of back-to-school prices and buy in bulk. If you know you’ll need paper later in the year, buy some extra this weekend.

If you try to make a list of what you need and what you want, you’ll have the things that are still in good shape from previous years,” said Holly Wilson, director of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. ” To put it in a nutshell, we don’t need to buy a calculator or ruler, you know some of these items will last year after year. So collect these items first. Make sure you have these so you can check them off when you look at your list of school provided items.”

The other thing is to buy generic items which can be cheaper than the branded ones.

“When it comes to buying things that you know will be used up fairly quickly, those items that you definitely want to genericize, things that need to be a little more durable,” Wilson said. “Perhaps you look at the price and how well this backpack or these lunch boxes will last a whole year.”

The number one thing you need to do to avoid a checkout shock is to create a budget.

“They have to budget exactly how much they want to spend and stick to the list,” Wilson said. “In other words, you know, if you look at school supplies and you have that list, well, that would be the core to build everything from.”

If you live in Missouri, start saving on your school supplies list starting Friday. in Arkansas you have to wait until Saturday. The tax-free weekend applies to state sales tax only. Below is a list of cities and counties where local sales tax still applies.
